T.O. Does a Solid for Mike Irvin
Michael Irvin is not getting fired.
I don't care what Rick Reilly or anybody else says. I know you want his pink slip underneath the Christmas tree, but it's not going to happen. Irvin proved that he's the Teflon Playmaker when he didn't get fired after getting charged with crack possession and not even bothering to mention it to his employer. After that, do you really think he's going to get fired just for mouthing off a little bit?
There are a couple of reasons Irvin's not going anywhere. For one, he's an interesting analyst. Love him or hate him, you can't forget him. And ESPN really is not in a position to cast off "talent" in such a competitive atmosphere. Irvin would be hired on another network if they fired him. NFL Countdown and Gameday are their only two stand out analysis programs. Think about what Gameday would be like without the traveling gimmick and what Countdown would be like without Irvin. Not a pretty thought. Irvin is actually pretty good at bringing out the best in his co-hosts. Jaws loves to talk back to him and Jackson is forced to step his game up so he's not completely overshadowed.
I also get the feeling that Michael Irvin's colleagues really like Irvin personally. He is definitely a love him or hate him type personality. And as long as the right people love him, Irvin is safe.
But there's another reason why Irvin is safe. And that reason is Terrell Owens.
Terrell Owens does in fact provide ratings bumps to ESPN. And The Playmaker has a hotline to T.O. He's got a bright red Blackberry that he gets to tapping on everytime he needs some help from Owens.
Irvin called in an emergency this week. And Owens is helping his homie out.
We all know Irvin is in a little bit of trouble over his comments about Antonio Romo. So, what does Irvin do to remind everyone of his importance to the worldwide leader? He sets up an interview with T.O., which is the feature of NFL Countdown this weekend. And T.O., being the friend that he is, has even set Irvin up with a little bit of controversy to optimize the get. That's all that "I was already at my birthday party", "Parcells is going to have to redo his speech" mess is about. Not only is Owens perfecting his comedy skills, he is mostly just setting up his boy so Irvin can ask Terrell all about it for the Countdown interview.
So just add that to your list of reasons to hate T.O. He's putting himself out there for kickers and keeping your least favorite analyst on your TV screen. And you should be extremely jealous that Michael Irvin has such a loyal friend, even if his name is Terrell Owens.

Let's make a list of the bloggers that like Michael Irvin.
Head Chick in Charge
Pacifist Viking
(crickets chirping)
(tumbleweeds rolling past)
We should have a competition for who can write the most posts defending Irvin.
And don't forget T.O. T.O. loves The Playmaker. And so does Dan Patrick. So, including us, Mike has 4 friends who will defend him in public.
Im not one of those folk who like Mike...He lost me after the great mustard colored suit debacle of 1996 during the Carolina Playoff Game.
I will say this: TO was COMPLETELY BSing about sleeping through the Parcells playoff speech. He caught every word of it. He may not have given a damn...but I assure you he wasnt asleep. He just told yall that BS to keep the natives around here restless. And lawd did it work.
Head Chick is dead on that ESPN keeps Mike around to maintain...uh...intellectual balance.
Kinda like keeping Juan Williams around on FOX News, although after reading his book, they gonna need a new token soon, cause Mr. Williams seems to have switched sides.
It does seem like whenever the subject of T.O. is being debated, Jackson just wants to kill Irvin.
