Howdy, Sage

Welcome, Sage Steele. You are the first Black woman to anchor SportsCenter since Robin Roberts (Am I right about that? Feel free to correct me in the comments). She comes most recently from the DC area Comcast Sportsnet. She paid some dues in the Tampa Bay area. She started on SportsCenter last week. On the show I caught, she called Digger Phelps "Dick Vitale." Nice. Dickie was not pleased. It was late in the week. I don't know if Sage was nervous or not.

Awful Announcing hit me up a while back and gave me the advance warning on Sage's imminent arrival at ESPN. He's familiar with her from DC Comcast and he claims she's good at her job. I'll withhold judgment because I've only seen her on a few shows. Right now, in true American Idol backhanded compliment fashion, the good news is that she looks really great. She's got Mike Greenberg beat out for prettiest SportsCenter anchor. Hands down. The rest? Only time will tell.

you're right, she does look good. i think once she gets her legs underneath she will do fine. she did seem a bit nervous last week.

Nervous doesn't begin to describe it. The jitters were there, especially when it came to prompter reading.

She'll get better. At least it was the early Sunday show -- didn't throw her completely to the wolves.

I think Cindy Brunson has done Sportscenter a couple times, but she's primarily ESPNews. There's another black female anchor on ESPNews as well.

OBJECTIFICATION ALERT!!!

But Sage is the dopest of them all. And she has the BEST name ever. I wonder if her brother is Lexxington Steele:)

RYC: Yeah, I got in a rut there. But Kobe was a sports obsession for me from 2001-2003; I kept on wildly going back and forth between "he's misunderstood!" "he's the devil!", etc. So it was nice to get it all out, but took forever.

Also, he kept doing interesting things while I was writing (the elbow to get suspended, 65 points), so I thought it wouldn't hurt the old hit counter. Anyway, don't be a stranger to the comments section :-) feel free to save me from my sports obsessions when necessary, ha.

I totally forgot about Robin Roberts. Not sure if she was the first, but I can't think of anyone else. I mentioned Danielle Sargent but she's only been on ESPN News I believe.

Anyway, I was feeling the post because I was having similar thoughts...

Hooray! Go on girl! We are proud of you!

Danielle Sargent HAS done SportsCenter...I BELIEVE she is the girl who dropped the F-Bomb on air a few years back...

It was Hysterical.

She's finer than Sage, btw.

And She and Kara Lawson apparently are doing the Women's championships.

It should be mandatory that all these talkin heads get out and do some real work with remotes and stuff.

Sage is a great name. And I saw her today on TV, actually. I liked what I saw. I think she'll be successful, as long as she stays well away from any ESPN personalities with the initials SS, ha. (What is it with SS and ESPN, anyway?!)

Completely doable.
